Do Succulents Make the Best House Plants?

Houseplants are the best-loved addition to numerous homes as they can brighten the room and an individual’s mood, and they also reduce the levels of indoor contaminants. However, some houseplants are more beneficial than others.

Here’s some reasons why succulents make the best houseplants:

  1. They can keep up with dry indoor conditions

In contrast to numerous plants, succulents are able to withstand conditions of relative, low humidity. They do not endure the awful consequences of dry air. This feature is especially essential in an indoor space, where air tends to be dryer in the winter months.

  1. They don’t need much fertilising

Succulents grow in the summer and spring and go dormant in the winter, with a somewhat “rest period” in autumn. The cycle shows they don’t require plenty of costly fertilisers to stay vibrant. You can avoid feeding your plant completely during the winter, or at least feed lightly.

You only require fertilising succulent plants three or four times all up during the warmer months of the year. Since they don’t need plenty of feeding, you can use nearly half the quantity of fertiliser you apply to a regular houseplant, which shows you’ll save money.

  1. They don’t require much watering

Succulent plants have an exceptional adaptation that allows them to withstand limited watering better compared to most houseplants. Their fleshy, thick leaves and stems, and their enlarged roots, enable them to retain water so that they do not require watering as often as other plants.

We expect cacti to need little watering, but this is true for most other succulents too. Usually, you can even enable the soil to dry out between waterings. In fact, you can kill a succulent houseplant with excessive water. However, you can know you have to water, when:

  • You can insert your fingers into the soil a few inches deep, and they come out dry.
  • The often shiny leaves start to wither.
  • The leaves shrink or pucker.

  1. They can fit nicely in your home

You can search for a succulent houseplant that matches any room in your home, and that will fit well in the available area. Succulent houseplants are prone to grow till their container’s size, so even if they grow large in the wild, you can limit their growth in your home. Varying kinds of succulents can fill different kinds of locations and spaces. You can find a plant for:

  • Hanging from a ceiling hook
  • Resting on a window sill in complete light
  • Growing in a dim, tall corner
  • Decorating the foyer
  • Beautifying an empty spot in a bookcase
